Civic Type R / FN2
The 8th Generation Honda Civic Type R (FN2) first made it’s appearance at the Geneva Motor Show, February 2006.
Taking an aggressive line on the futuristic design of the new civic, the European market Civic Type R came in the form of a 3 door hatch back. The concept yellow livery never made it into production; however the FN2 did come in the same colours as it’s predecessor (except for cosmic grey), with new choices in the form of Deep Bronze Pearl and more recently, Crystal Black and Deep Sapphire Blue.
Honda produced 3 variants of the Type R; a standard version, GT and Championship White Edition. The GT variant saw further examples of refinement over the standard, with air conditioning, cruise control, auto wipers and more. The Championship white edition boasted a limited slip diff and exterior chrome trim in addition to the GT refinements. All MY10 models now come with a limited slip diff as standard. The interior follows a ‘red’ theme, with different part alcantara sports seats with red stitching, to the illuminated dash, digital display and foot well lights (optional extra).
Powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.0 litre DOHC i-VTEC engine, the FN2 is capable of reaching 146mph and acceleration of 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds.
It offers improved refinement and responsiveness thanks to a new balancer shaft and a drive-by-wire throttle.
At 8,000 rpm, the maximum power output of 201 PS power is reached. Slightly lower gearing compensates for a small increase in kerb weight. It’s high revving nature is retained, but the switch to high lift, long duration valve timing now takes place at a lower 5,200 rpm, and continues all the way to the 8,000 rpm red line. The use of a less complex torsion beam axle in the FN2 , as compared to the former double wishbone set up retains it’s ability to corner well.
As anticipated by the Honda fanbase, Honda gave Mugen the green light for a limited production run of the Civic Type R Mugen hot hatch in 2010. These came in two flavours, the M20 - Type R Mugen and the M200 - Type R Mugen 200 Limited Edition. The M20 is otherwise the ‘full-fat’ version of the Type R Mugen, complete with the large rear wing, Mugen alloys, suspension and brakes.
As the name suggests, only 20 were made, and are now all sold. The M200 was seen as a chance for anyone who missed the now unavailable championship white FN2 to get their hands on one. This is essentially a standard championship white FN2 with similar body styling to the M20, 19” lightning alloys and a Mugen number plaque by the gear shift. Only 200 will be produced.
